The Eyes of Dumb Animals Shining Their Light

Published by ryantheduke at 10:38 pm under Shows, MP3s, News

Handsome FursThe happily married duo, known as Handsome Furs set out on their little holiday tour of Ontario last night in Ottawa. They were slated to play at Club Saw, but then moved to Mavericks for capacity issues… and after seeing Mavericks, I can’t imagine how small Club Saw must be. We arrived at about 8:15, and met Dan and Alexei outside who were also on their way in after SEVEN HOURS of driving from Montreal, which is normally a two hour drive. Dan jokes about that and Quebec’s inability to cope with large amounts of snow in his always entertaining stage banter.

They have been touring for quite a while now, so there were no new songs played. We were treated to incredible versions of the album songs, as well as the non-album track “Heaven” and their cover of Tom Petty’s “You Got Lucky”. For lack of new songs, Dan said he was adding in some new lyrics, which was a nice bonus. “Snakes on the Ladder” and “Dumb Animals” now have new endings.

My only regret of the night is not bringing a second disc to record Wood Hands, who played an amazing set. Check them out if they play near you. I am, however, proud of my Handsome Furs recording, and here it is:

  1. What We Had
  2. Hearts of Iron
  3. Cannot Get Started
  4. Handsome Furs Hate This City
  5. Snakes on the Ladder
  6. Dead + Rural
  7. Dumb Animals
  8. The Radio’s Hot Sun
  9. Heaven
  10. Sing! Captain
  11. You Got Lucky (Tom Petty cover)

========================================

In another bit of news, congratulations to Felipe from Chile who won our first contest, a signed copy of Buck 65’s latest release, “Situation”.  Hopefully, we’ll have another soon.

Have a good holiday season everyone!  I’m off to Newfoundland tomorrow to…drink.  Ahhh, celebrating the season.  Brock will be working on the blog over the holidays from his Montreal headquarters, and I will check in with my Bon Iver post, and hopefully some more goodies.

Thanks very much for this. I was superpissed to have missed both shows in Kingston. This makes up for it a bit. Happy Holidays.

It wasn’t moved because of capacity issues…just monetary ones. Saw is too expensive.

(Though it turned out that space would’ve been an issue too — there’s no way that many people could’ve fit into Saw!)
